International excellence in pain management

Comprehending and treating pain demands constant hyper-specialisation. Therefore, following years of experience as a Consultant Anaesthetist, I relocated to England to undertake a fellowship (2024 to 2025) at The Walton Centre (Liverpool, England). This centre is a globally pioneering institution dedicated exclusively to neuroscience and pain management, and it operates as a reference hospital associated with the European Pain Federation. There, I devoted myself exclusively to the interdisciplinary management of pain and advanced interventional procedures: specialty clinics—Facial Pain, Pelvic Pain, Oncological Pain, alongside Myofascial and Large Joint Pain—botulinum toxin, prolonged ketamine infusions, intrathecal pumps, transcranial magnetic stimulation, the Pain Management Programme—collaborating with physiotherapists, rehabilitation specialists, psychologists, and occupational therapists—and complex pharmacological management, both within the outpatient Opioid Clinic and the inpatient Detoxification Unit. At present, I maintain my affiliation with the vanguard of British medicine through a clinical research contract with the Pain Relief Foundation at this very hospital, within the team led by Doctor Andreas Goebel, an expert in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and the author of the principal European guidelines and publications concerning this pathology.

To consolidate this perspective, I hold the highest accreditations within my field:
• European Diploma in Pain Medicine, awarded by the European Pain Federation.
• Master’s Degree in Comprehensive Pain Management, awarded by the Spanish Multidisciplinary Pain Society.
• Doctorate Cum Laude from the Complutense University of Madrid, with a thesis on intravenous lidocaine.
• Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Course by Curonix; Ultrasound in Pain Management by the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia; Radiofrequency in Chronic Pain by the Spanish Pain Society; and Hands-On Cadaveric Interventional Pain Management led by Doctor Abejón.
• Comprehensive Advanced Pain Management Training Course by the Pain Institute of Spain (currently ongoing).

A Global and Humanitarian Trajectory

My journey in medicine commenced at the Autonomous University of Madrid, although I completed my fourth and fifth years of study in Italy as an Erasmus student (at the Universities of Parma and Bologna, respectively). I undertook my residency in Anaesthesiology at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital, a national leader in this specialty. Subsequently, I spent a significant portion of my professional life at that same institution, operating as a Consultant Anaesthetist, a Patient Safety Reference Practitioner, and a trainer of critical incident analysts in Spain and Chile. For years, my work was dedicated to paediatric anaesthesia, which also permitted me to practise and train at elite hospitals such as the Children’s Hospital Boston (Harvard Medical School, United States of America) and the Necker-Enfants Malades University Hospital (Paris, France). I have published over ten articles in indexed journals and delivered more than fifty presentations at national and international congresses. The vital and professional turning point of my career arrived via Médecins Sans Frontières. During my four international field missions—in the Gaza Strip, Bangui (Central African Republic), and Port-au-Prince (Haiti)—I served as the sole frontline anaesthetist in crisis contexts. Those experiences completely redefined my comprehension of resilience and pain.

Medicine and Language

Clinical medicine is not predicated solely upon technical precision, but equally upon communication and empathy. It is my belief that to speak eloquently is to think lucidly. For this reason, in parallel with my scientific career, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the Complutense University of Madrid, and I obtained a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing. I read and write every single day.
